There is an interesting article from CNN.com about job success that you may want to read:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/LIVING/worklife/07/18/cb.fatalmistakes/index.html
It is applicable to the DTC Program since it alludes to skillsets needed for a successful career. Since the spring I have been thinking a lot about the notion of skillsets, trying to hone in on those that I think the DTC courses can provide students. Two of them show up as necessary ones in the CNN.com article.
With that in mind, here are the four skillsets that students build in DTC courses:
1. Tech Skills: Comfort with and knowledge of computers, computing devices, software, and multimedia / electronic environments
2. Critical Skills: The ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information, particularly information derived from media objects
3. Communication Skills: Ability to communicate in multiple contexts––from oral scenarios to the print medium to electronic environments
4. Management Skills: Ability to work in teams on large or small scale projects; ability to work with people
Ted Fordyce, a graduate of the DTC, has been accepted into Georgetown University's Communication, Culture & Technology Master of Arts Program (CCT). This prestigious program provides an interdisciplinary study of contemporary communication, media, and information technologies.
Ted begins the program this fall. He and his wife, Kerry Sharp, will be leaving Vancouver at the end of the summer for Washington DC. We wish you well, Ted.

The DTC Program at WSUV is looking for a student to help determine the feasibility for and subsequent development of a virtual site for the DTC Program on Second Life. The ideal candidate has experience with Second Life and/or other webbed-based virtual environments; has completed FA 332, DTC 355; knows PhotoShop, digital photography, and some video production. Knowledge of Flash would be most helpful but is not a requirement for this position.
Duties: Gather data about Second Life about site development; advise DTC Program Director about creating presence for the DTC on Second Life; and help to create and maintain presence at Second Life
Position begins September 1, 2007
Internship credit: 1-6 hours, depending on the work determined to be done on the project
For more information, contact Dr. John Barber, DTC Internship Coordinator, at jfbarber@vancouver.wsu.edu or 360-546-9645.
The DTC Program is looking to host a "field trip" to Interactive Futures 2007, to be held in Victoria, Canada on November 15-18. This conference, chaired by Steve Gibson, Julie Andreyev, and Randy Adams is one of the best conferences in North America for media arts. There are a lot of festivals that focus on specific areas of the media arts (PICA's Time Based Arts, for example). But Interactive Futures is one of the only annual general "international" art-based and academic conferences.
The website is up and located at http://cfisrv.finearts.uvic.ca/interactivefutures/IF07/.
Read through the information and let me know if this would be something you all would be interested in.
FYI: Steve is one of the three artists who is coming to WSUV to teach DTC 477 "Advanced Multimedia Authoring" this fall. He will be here from September 20-November 1.
